Women of the Beat Generation

This is a space that focuses on giving voice to and sharing ideas about the women of the Beat Generation.

Meet the Beats: Joyce Johnson (formerly Glassman) wrote a Beat novel in 1962 called Come and Join the Dance about a young girl who drops out of college and loses her virginity for the sake of her own curiosity and experience. While this novel is no longer in publication and therefore a bit difficult to find, she has written many other texts since then. Most notably, her memoir Minor Characters details the experience of being female and coming of age in the 50s and 60s. In doing, it discusses her involvement in the Beat Generation and her relationship with fellow Beat poet Jack Kerouac. Most recently Johnson has published a biography and study of Kerouac called The Voice is All.
